Have you put your ear to the heater and heard some unfamiliar noise? Some rooms are cold as ice while in others you are comfortable. Yet for all that, your energy bill seems to be on the upswing month after month with no change in your habits to account for it.
Then you have a heating system calling for some attention. We at Amos Home Services (Amos Electric) can put an end to that. For over 75 years our certified technicians have been of service to Temple and the rest of Greater Bell County and we know what to make of these things. Call (254) 280-5514 and we will set it right.
For the most part a system will not just give up without putting up some warning first. The hard part is recognising those signs so one does not have to wait for a breakdown on the year’s coldest night.
Unusual Noises
There should be little sound from a properly functioning heating system. Any noise that seems out of order is an indication the system wants some help. Pay heed to any of the following:
- Banging or clanking upon start up
- Squealing or screeching, typically a matter with the belt or motor
- Rattling of a loose component
- Grinding indicative of bearings that have worn down
- Popping or booming from a delayed ignition
All too often a homeowner will put up with such sounds until they cannot be ignored and what was once a minor fix has become a major one.
Uneven Heating or Poor Airflow
When heat does not seem to get to some parts of the house but leaves other rooms at a nice temperature there is an issue. Vents with weak airflow are a red flag.
Be it a clogged filter, obstructed ducts or a blower motor on its last legs, or perhaps the system is just too old to do the job, a technician will be able to determine if a repair is called for or something else.
Rising Energy Bills
If you are paying more for the same warmth, your system is expending more energy than it ought to because of waning efficiency or parts that have seen better days. You will see it on the monthly bill so it is not hard to spot. Should the numbers go up for no apparent reason, have the system looked at.
Odours from the Heat
You should not be met with any odour when the heat is running, save for a bit of dust the first time you put it on for the season which is to be expected. Other smells are another matter entirely.
Beware of a musty smell from the ductwork that could be mold, or a burning electrical scent that does not go away. In the case of any gas smell, get out and make a call; do not tarry.
Short Cycling
Constant on and off cycling puts undue strain on the equipment and will cut its life short. Whether the thermostat is at fault or there is an airflow issue, this sort of thing also precludes a consistent temperature in the home.
An Old System
Years will tell on even the best of systems. If the unit is ten or twenty years old and you are encountering the above, expect to spend more on repairs.
With our Priority Maintenance Plan (PMP) you can forestall trouble with annual tune ups and 10% off on service repairs, and we offer financing for anything of a larger nature.
We are licensed and insured and consider ourselves a good part of the Bell County community in Temple, Killeen, Harker Heights, Copperas Cove, Belton, Fort Hood and Gatesville. Our hours are 8:00am to 5:00pm Monday to Thursday and until 3:30pm on Friday, though we are here round the clock for an emergency. Let us keep you warm.
